This Island is smaller than the Island of Unguja, which united and form Zanzibar; lusher and hillier; is located 40 km north of Zanzibar (Unguja) and is about 70 km long. The beaches of Pemba are unspoiled and Islands surround the Island and offshore of the coral reef are in pristine condition providing excellent diving and snorkeling paradise. The Island is famous for its clove production and this is the mainstay of Pemba's economy.
During the nights, the wind whispers through the clove plantation, which cover most of Pemba, in night bring the sound of distant drumming. Also Pemba was famous for the power of its necromancy and magicians, with devotees of the black arts coming from far away as Haiti; infact the infrastructure in Pemba still very poor and there are small guest houses dotted around the Island. Nowadays a couple of up market diving, hotels, have recently opened, also the island is famous for bull fighting, this is a popular local sport, which was imported by Portuguese. |
