Mkomazi Game Reserve:

Mkomazi Game Reserve is the Southern extension of Kenya's Vast Tsavo National Park, Covering an area of 3,701 Sq Kms. (about miles), East of Kilimanjaro and immediately north of the Pare and Usambara Mountains.

The reserve is practically undeveloped for tourism's does not at present offer game viewing compared with other reserves and it is certainly not a conventional safari.

Location: The game Reserve is located east of Kilimanjaro and immediately north of the Pare and Usambara Mountains.

Best time to visit: No game viewing at present.

Bird life: Over 400 bird's species have been recorded in the reserve. At least 8 species not previously recorded in Tanzania. This includes red-shark, woodpecker, and secretary bird.

Wildlife: Most of the large mammals Species found in Tsavo are either resident in Mkomazi or else regularly migrate there from Kenya.

These include the lions, cheetahs, elephant, giraffes, buffaloes, zebra, Impalas, Leopards, and gerenuk. African hunting dogs were recently reintroduced into the Game. Also the black Rhinos has been brought from South Africa.

Access: The best way to go about organising a walking strip into Mkomazi would be to walk or hitch the 5Km from same (small town on the Moshi-Dar-es-salaam road). To Zange Gate for arrangement with the warden to hire armed rangers or guides.

To do: Walking Safari is indeed the most popular activity to see wildlife and hiking in the hills, which is Unique as the reserve is not over, crowded by tourists also the Dindera Dam is another good place to see large mammals.
