Iringa Town:

The town lies at 1635 masl, about 502 km southwest of Dar es Salaam on the main road Tanzania - Zambia highway overlooking the Ruaha River. The area is fertile, an important region's agriculture trading center for the production of maize, vegetable, fruits, tobacco and tea. The plateau in the area commands panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, while the pleasant temperate climate attracted settlers to the area. German architectures can still be seen in town including the Old Boma, the Town Hall, the Regional Hospital, and the Post Office. Iringa is also a picturesque gateway for excursion to Ruaha national park, Isimila historical site and Kalenga village with Chief Mkwawa's museum.

Isimila: Its over 20 km southwest of Iringa on the main road to Mbeya, the site was once a shallow lake which dried up, which considered one of the finest Stone Age sites in East Africa. Excavations here have uncovered thousands of stone tools dating from Acheulian period. Some of the richest finds of Stone Age tools were discovered in 1951. Many fossilized bones were also found in the area, among them is one of mammal related to the modern Giraffe (silvatherium) but having a mush shorter neck and an extinct hippopotamus (H.Gorgpps) with unusual periscope like projections. You may visit a museum, which built in the site in 1969 that displays some of the tools, fossils and bones found during the excavations.
