It is the largest city in Tanzania and the busiest port in East Africa with an estimated 3.5 million people that, it is attracting more investors indicated by increase in number of hotels, banks and restaurants as well as growing tourist market.

It is the gate way to Zanzibar Island, a 75 minutes by ferry/ speed boat and also the starting point for many safaris to the Southern circuit tour sites, Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi National Park, Ruaha National Park also Udzungwa Mountains National Park and Western circuit tour sites, Mahale Mountains National Park, Gombe stream National Park and Katavi National Park.
